2011 ~ SEV's

Sexual Entertainment Venues:  on 30th March 2011 the Corporation's Licensing Committee imposed a 'Nil Limit' on the number of SEV's (eg Lap Dancing Clubs) to be permitted in the City of London. This was particularly relevant to our Ward, as there was an impending license application for a venue of this type within our environs.

This decision does not prevent applications being made, but they will be subject to the Policy agreed by the Committee.

The 2010 Boundary Review

Original proposals were the removal of either the Clothworkers’ Livery Hall or the Bakers’ Livery Hall to the Ward of Billingsgate, in order to increase the number of voters in the latter Ward, plus the reduction of the number of Common Councilmen for Tower Ward from five to four.  As a result of the removal of the area bounding the Clothworkers’ Hall, St Olaves church and its hall would have been located in different Wards.

Thanks to submissions from the Ward Representatives, both Halls, and St Olaves Church - plus support from the Policy & Resources Committee, there is to be no geographical change to the Ward, although we will lose one Common Councilman in 2013.

Night Time Economy

A matter raised by residents at Annual Wardmotes each year.  The number of social venues within the Ward brings with it the inevitable problems:  noise/congestion on streets/parking problems/lewd behaviour/evidence of drug usage/cleansing problems. Residents and businesses in the Ward should document anti-social incidents (keep a log; take photos) - objections need to be statutory.  Negative information must be evidence-based. Managements can be approached, licences can be reviewed if sufficient negative evidence.
The Ward Representatives and local Police are more than willing to assist, given the ammunition.  Anyone experiencing problems may now contact their Elected Representatives direct as the latter are now allowed input on licensing issues.

Voting Qualification

Are our Ward Businesses aware of their voting entitlement?  Visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/voting to clarify, where there are any doubts.  It’s not just about being able to vote, it’s about having a voice.

The ‘Pop-up’ Toilet

As featured in the December 2009 Ward Newsletter.  No decisions have yet been made as to the location of the six units within the City; four will proceed, phased in sets of two.  Byward Street is not being treated as a priority site, due to the negative response which has been received.

Tower Bridge repainting Works 2008/11

The repainting of the South & North chains are complete, and the recent issues with TfL surrounding the future progress of the works and the management of road and pedestrian traffic in the area have been resolved.  As a result, the repainting of the walkways and bascules commenced on 28th June 2010, and should be completed by May 2011.

Arrangements have been negotiated with the painting contractor that will limit the impact of the repainting works to 35 night closures to road traffic, and 10 night closures to both pedestrian and road traffic.

Planning

There are a number of major developments within the Ward - either ongoing or pending. These are:

Three Quays
Demolition is currently taking place prior to redevelopment which will provide luxury apart-hotel and retail accommodation.

10 Trinity Square
To become a luxury 121 room hotel, to include a Presidential Suite, together with 30 private residential apartments.  This development, which is currently on hold, will result in the replacement of the Seething Lane Garden with an increased area of public open space.  A truly quality development!

52 Minories
The demolition of the existing building, to be replaced by ten stories for use as student accommodation.

76 - 86 Fenchurch Street
(includes 1 - 7 Northumberland Alley & 1/1A Carlisle Avenue).  Currently on hold, the demolition of existing buildings and replacement by a 15 storey office building with retail facilities.

Minories Car Park
Redevelopment to provide nine stories of office space, but no evidence that this will take place.

64 - 74 Mark Lane
(includes Hart St., New London St.,  London St.).  Redevelopment to provide offices currently under consideration.

Aldgate Bus Station
This extensive redevelopment is unlikely to proceed in its current form at this time.
