The Ward of
Tower 2011
Welcome to the website for the Ward of Tower ~ one of the 25
Wards which make up the City of London ~ the ‘Square Mile’. Each
Ward is represented on the Court of Common Council, the decision
making body for the City of London Corporation.
This website is hosted by the City of London Corporation for the
benefit of Ward voters specifically, and generally: for
anyone who takes an interest in the Ward, wishes to learn more
about the Ward, or be kept informed of current developments by
virtue of subscribing to the website.
A number of other City Wards also have their own websites. To

Electoral Reform
The City of London
gave a number of parliamentary undertakings to secure wider
electoral reform than was provided for in the City of London (Ward
Elections) Act, the legislation promoted by the City Corporation to
change the City’s electoral system. These included a
commitment to review the boundaries of the four residential Wards
to preserve their residential character, and a further pledge to
review the boundaries of the remaining Wards.
The first boundary review was undertaken in 2003, (the first for
several hundred years), and as part of that process, the City of
London Corporation reduced the number of its Members (Common
Councilmen). The Ward of Tower gained a considerable amount
of ground, plus an extra Common Councilman. The second review took
place in 2010, and as a result, although the Ward of Tower retained
its geographical boundaries, we will lose one Common Councilman in
2013, the year the next Ward elections are to be held.
Ward Club
Apart from its history and
traditions, and its renowned business personna, the City is a
social place. Each ward has a Ward Club, which for most
members simply provides social events ranging from elegant, formal
Civic Luncheons with the Lord Mayor, and in our case - to boules in
the Tower of London Moat and occasional forays abroad - always
offering an opportunity to access wonderful City buildings which
are otherwise not accessible.
Most Clubs were born from the original Ratepayers’ Associations,
but our Club was conceived in 1970, being the very last. Its
motto “Non praecurrimus sed pergimus”: colloquially, not in the
van, but we lead…accurately indicates its striving to be the
successful, thriving Club it is today. Created as an informal
opportunity for the Alderman, Common Councilmen and the Ward voters
to engage with each other on issues relevant to the Ward, it now
offers membership to those who live within the Ward, work within
the Ward, or simply have a genuine interest in the history and
traditions of the City. For further details, contact
